Women And Minority Leaders Are Penalized For Fostering Diversity, Study Finds

The researchers discovered that, while women and nonwhites were rated by their peers as significantly more valuing of diversity than white males were, their efforts only earned them disfavor from their bosses. The study revealed that for the entire sample of 362 executives, the majority of whom were white males, valuing diversity gave a significant boost to ratings for warmth and performance. However, for women execs,it was negatively related to ratings for both variables, and for ethnic minorities it turned bosses’ thumbs down on competence. “Diversity-valuing behavior was negatively related only to evaluations of leaders who were nonwhite or female leaders who are thought to have the greatest potential to dismantle the glass ceiling,” the study’s authors wrote. “This finding suggests that minorities and women might be able to advance their own careers by acting as tokens and engaging in a low level of diversity-valuing behavior.” To determine whether the low ratings received by the nonwhite and female diversity-valuing managers reflect bosses’ doubts about these leaders’ objectivity in hiring and promoting individuals of their own gender or race, rather than them simply being biased, researchers conducted a behavioral experiment that enabled them to control key factors, such as the quality of job candidates. For the experiment, the study’s authors divided 395 college students in four groups, each of which viewed a presentation in which a human resources manager presented photos and information about four candidates for a position as project manager and advocated for one. The four candidates, as well as the four HR managers, were a white male, a while female, a nonwhite male and a nonwhite female. The white male HR manager advocated for each of the four candidates, each to a different audience. The white female manager advocated for either the white male or white female candidate, while the non-white male manager promoted the white male or nonwhite male applicant.

A calendar is a great tool for managing your time. You may prefer a printed calendar you can write on. Others like to access their calendars electronically. Make sure to have a calendar on hand at all times though.

Spend your time wisely. Figure out how long each of your projects will take you to complete. Allocate yourself a specific amount of time to work on each task. It will help you spend your time smartly and enjoy life more. If any surprise pockets of free time wind up in your lap, use them to chill out or make up ground on anything you’ve fallen behind on.

If a whole list seems overwhelming, just concentrate on one thing at a time. Lots of folks fail when they think they can multi-task. If you try to multi-task too much, you will just end up frazzled. Additionally, your work will be of poor quality. Keep calm and breathe so that you can focus on one task and a time.

Plan your day in advance. You can do this via a future list of things to do at the conclusion of your day, or create a comprehensive plan of action. This will help you feel better when you wake up in the morning, and you will be able to jump right into work.

Prioritize all the activities you do every day. Lots of times, your mundane tasks waste the majority of the day. Prioritize your tasks to spend your time efficiently. Jot down what needs doing, and tackle each item in order of priority.

When you can’t manage your time well, consider how you spend your time. You must be smart about it. Only view your voice mails or emails if you’re able to use that time on them. When you check your messages all the time, you can lose focus on the other tasks at hand.

Plan out your day right after you wake up. Write down your schedule on paper. This will help you use your time efficiently.

Let the phone ring, and don’t answer texts while you’re trying to finish a task. It’s hard to resume doing something when you have interruptions. Finish what you are doing before returning calls, texts and instant messages.

Take a peek at the schedule you have. Is there something you can cut? Do you know of tasks that you really could delegate to someone else? Delegation can be a real ally when it comes to managing time. When you delegate a task to another person, you can let the other person finish the task, and you will not need to handle it.

Using the info shared here will be instrumental in helping you get a firm grasp on managing your time better. Time is valuable and shouldn’t be wasted. When you efficiently use your time, you’ll get more done.
